Mixing It Up With Layers!

Hello friends! WOW! That last month went by really fast! I think it’s because I was busier than usual on my blog, but that’s great that all of the crafting got me through the cold month quickly! I know it will still feel cold in March, but hopefully it will start warming up little by little! Until then, I still need to wear some layers!

Speaking of LAYERS… That brings us to a new challenge over at the Mix It Up Challenge Blog. The challenges always run for 6 weeks so there is plenty of time to enter. The theme given this time around is: LAYERS or you can do the ‘Anything Goes” too. Here’s the card that I came up with for the challenge using the theme:

Aren’t these hedgies cute! I’ve had this stencil set for a while and haven’t had a chance to use it until now and I thought it would be fun to try out the Triple Time Stamping technique. (If you don’t know what I’m referring to, check out this video on You Tube HERE.) I thought this would be a great way to insure several layers on my card.

The cute hedgehogs come from the Taylored Expressions Hedgehugs Stamp & Stencil Combo. I used the technique to layer the panels together and then stamped and stenciled the hedgehogs and then layered each panel with the Spearmint cardstock. The smallest layer on top was popped up with foam tape. (I added the white shimmer ribbon around the middle and front panels before attaching to the card.)

I used the coordinating die to cut out some extra hedgehogs and I popped them up with foam tape over a white metallic heart. I also white heat embossed the sentiment from the TE To the Point stamp set and cut it out to pop up under the “kissing hedgehogs”. I’ve also added a few more tiny die cut hearts from the white metallic paper.

I THINK I’ve got about 7 layers all together not including the card base.

Art Journal Inspiration-Soul Singing

Hello friends! I’m back today with one last inspiration for Art Journal Journey to remind you that there are still a few days left to enter your art journal project for this month! So please be sure to hop on over to the Art Journal Journey Challenge Blog to see the details about how to enter. I have really enjoyed all of the inspiration from the gallery! So fun to see what everyone comes up with using my “MUSIC” theme this month! I thank everyone for having me along as a host and sharing your kindness in welcoming me back this year.

I went with some animals this time:

I’m pretty sure that there has to be some sort of music going on at farm too, right?! LOL I found these cute “singing” critters online and thought that a farm scene would be a perfect platform stage for them! This is also the first time that I’ve ever added an interactive element to an art journal page, so that was fun!

For the background: Starting with an 8.5″x 5.5″ watercolor paper, I printed the critters over it in the position that I wanted…this is so that the musical notes showed on the page.

I then used my Kuratake Gansi watercolors and brush to paint a scene starting with blues for the sky, letting that dry and then adding some green hills for the bottom of the scene. I went over the areas a couple of times to get the look I wanted and let it dry. I also die cut a green grassy border at the bottom of the page with green cardstock being careful to place it so that it covered the “legs/feet” of all the critters.

More layers over the background: I used older Tim Holtz stamps to add some texture by stamping brown ink, then I used an old TH stencil and some yellow paint for the “sun rays” around the hill with a sponge to apply it. I also used a sponge with white ink to stencil over another stencil in areas and lastly, I stamped some musical notes in silver ink in a few places.

Here’s a closer look at some of the details including the critters.

Since I covered up the critters with the grassy border, I printed out the critters again on a separate piece of cardstock, colored them with Copic markers and fussy cut them out with my scissors. I attached them over top of the printed out ones on the page so that they align with the music notes above them. I used more markers to add some darker shadow grounding underneath each critter before permanently attaching to the page.

For the interactive element: I used a die cut to cut out the pieces for the windmill in the brown, white and silver cardstock pieces. I then used a circle die to cut a hole in the center of the windmill on the page and then added an element that makes the wheel portion spin in a circle when you spin it with your finger.

I went around the edges with some blue ink for the sky, attached some clouds and then printed out the quote on my computer and cut out each word attached to the page. I used some blue ink to lightly add to the bottom of each one.

Lastly, I went around the edges of the page along with the edges of each word with a black micron pen and then I used a silver paint pen to go around the edges of the page again.

It’s a pretty flat page, but it made me happy! What song do you think they’re singing?

February AJ Collab-You Are Enough

Hello friends! I’m back again today to share some more inspiration with my Art Journaling!

Today starts another AJ page with my crafty friend Carol (from Crafty-Stamper) who is collaborating with me to “SMASH OUR STASH”! We get creative trying to use up our never-ending stash piles along with a prompt for each month. I know she always has great inspiration to share, so please check out her blog too! Here’s my AJ page with the “SMASH OUR STASH” February prompt of “MUSIC” (of course!):

Really had fun with this page as it’s got that bright and cheerful background which is a great reminder to yourself especially when the world looks black and white.

I was able to pull out several stash items like the DecoArt Fluid Acrylic Paints, the stamp sets and dies, some of which, I’ve had for a long time and some never used!

For the background: I started with a canvas cardstock 140# measuring 8.5″x5.5″ and attached a music sheet of the same size over it. (I have tons of sheet music ephemera!) I then used the DecoArt Fluid Acrylic Paints to go over it in a horizontal bright rainbow. Once dry, I splattered white paint over it. I also went around the edges with a black paint marker.

The flowers at the bottom came from the Taylored Expressions Botanical Beauty Background (retired), that I stamped in black and colored with cool grey markers. I liked that it covered the entire width of my panel. I used a coordinating die to cut it with and attached to the bottom. I layered a black strip at the very bottom…because I thought it needed it.

Moving to the top of the page, I used a Lawn Fawn Little Heart Strings border die cut out with some shimmer vellum. (I also used the same vellum for the butterfly wings.) I attached this to the top of the page with double sided adhesive strip. I glued down the tiny hearts. This is the first time I’ve used this die because I had to cut it apart! The butterfly dies came from a very old My Favorite Things die set that is no longer available…not sure of the name even. The sentiment at the top over the heart string border came from the Taylored Expressions “You Are” that was white heat embossed over black cardstock and cut out with the coordinating die. I attached it over the border.

Lastly, I used my Cricut Machine to cut out some single music notes in black glossy cardstock and I attached those to the center of the die cut butterflies. I used some black Stickles glitter and put “dots” on the heart strings border, the butterflies and the center of the flowers.

“W” is for WINGS

Hello friends and happy Friday! It has been very cold over our way and I’m staying indoors as much as I can which means some crafting time is happening! I do like looking from my window and seeing the chickadee birds along with the squirrels in the feeders! I enjoy seeing those bright red cardinals, but I don’t get to see those as often.

Today is a new challenge over at the Alphabet Challenge and we are on the letter “W”. The hostess has went with the theme “W is for “WINGS“. You will have 2 weeks to join us, so I hope to see your creations in the gallery! Here’s my card using this theme:

Since it’s so cold out, I decided to skip on over through winter and go straight to warm spring/summer with a dragonfly! We usually don’t see dragonflies over my way until it gets pretty warmed up. (It has to be above 60 degrees Fahrenheit, on average, for them to come out.) I also was happy to finally pull out a stamp set that I got from STAMPtember of last year created by Kitchen Sink Stamps. Unfortunately, this company is no longer operating. There are a couple of stamp sets available for purchase on the Simon Says Stamp website I see. But this particular stamp set called “All Aflutter” was only available during the STAMPtember event. I’m happy to get it even though I didn’t make it in time to grab the die set before it sold out, but it’s a beautiful set. It’s actually the only Kitchen Sink Stamps I own.

I started out with the green flower stems at the bottom. This is a layering stamp set, so they very cleverly put the numbers in order to stamp. I then added three purple colors for the flowers to go on top of the green stems. I stamped the sentiment from the set with the “Hi” done in purple ink. I ink blended like colors around the card panel.

I stamped the dragonfly body onto the card panel BEFORE stamping the sentiment for the placement of the design. I attached the card front to a purple A2 top folding card base.

Dragonflies have to have that shimmer on their wings! It’s so hard to take a photo of the shimmer from the glitter pen and I wanted that to come through for my dragonfly wings!

The dragonfly was stamped in the corresponding layers for his body and wings on a separate piece of cardstock. The lightest grey was the wings. I used my scissors to fussy cut him out and blended some light blue ink around his wings. I glued the middle section of him only so that I could pop up the wings a bit.

Lastly, I added some shimmer to his wings with the glitter pen and attached some gems.

Art Journal Inspiration-Happiness, Harmony & Joy

Hello friends! Brr! It’s a very cold start to the week over my way, so that means I’m staying inside the warmth and crafting up some fun to share! I’m really enjoying putting together these pages this month as I get to pull some things from my stash that I’ve really been wanting to play with. This gives me a chance to use things for myself in whatever way I want because I don’t give these pages away and I think I find it to be a bit more “freeing” to do or try things that I may not normally do on a card.

Maybe I can encourage you to try something for yourself! I have more inspiration to share for the “MUSIC” prompt I’m hosting this month at Art Journal Journey:

For this page, I pulled out an AALL & Create stamp set that I’ve been wanting to use “Call the Tune” and I wanted to use the trumpet from the set. I always think of trumpets as a bold and happy musical tune, so I thought flowers and my favorite colors would make me feel happy too!

For the background: I started with an 8.5″x5.5″ watercolor panel and watered down some purple and turquoise acrylic paints so that I could use them like watercolor. Once dry, I attached some musical note tissue paper off the side and I also stamped the trumpet image in black on the top of the page. I then used the flower image and gold heat embossed it on the bottom and top of the page. I then took some black paint to splatter over it. Lastly, I took the AALL & Create Reverse Triangles Stencil and some metallic white embossing paste over it in random areas. Once that was dry, I went around the edges with the black Distress Crayon.

Moving towards the bottom of the page, I stamped the flower image twice, colored them with Copic markers and fussy cut them out to line the bottom of the page. Before attaching them, I splattered them with gold watercolor and white Copic Opaque. I also used the black Distress Crayon to go underneath the flowers before I attached them.

The musical notes were cut from my Cricut Machine with black glossy cardstock. I also attached a few select words from the AALL & Create Motivation Station Ephemera pack and used a black marker to line around each one.

I stamped another trumpet image and colored it with Copic markers and then fussy cut around the colored images to attach over the black image I stamped on the page. I even used a knife to go in between the sections of the trumpet. It was a bit tedious, but worth it.

I finished the page off with some gold Stickles in the center of the flowers for a touch of sparkle because sparkle makes me happy too!

For Someone You Love at Sparkles Monthly

Hello friends! I hope that you had a great Valentine’s Day yesterday however you chose to celebrate it! We chose to stay indoors where it’s warm and watch a movie!

And speaking of love, this brings us to the February challenge over at Sparkles Monthly and for this month, our hostess is asking for a “Love Card (for anyone you love)” . Be sure to stop by the blog to see what the rest of the design team has created for you. Here’s my project for this challenge:

Aren’t these heart sweaters adorable?! I had fun making a couple of cards to send to my kids (whom I love) for Valentine’s Day. I was actually able to create two similar cards using a stencil set that allows you to make 4 sweaters at one time.

I love the Taylored Expressions Sweater Weather Stencil Set that you can ink blend up to four different sweaters at once. This had previous come out for Christmas, but in December, they came out with a cute Valentine line to go with this stencil. So I gold foiled a panel from the TE Foil It-Valentine Sweater Weather pack and then to decorate the sweaters, I used the TE Dinky Decorations Valentine die set. I wanted more hearts, so I die cut a few extra to place around the background.

Speaking of the background, I used the TE Lots of Love 3D embossing folder and then sponged a bit of white over the hearts so they stood out a bit more. I also die cut the A2 Thin Frame die for a gold mirror frame. The sentiment came from the TE Love & Hugs stamp set.

And here’s a closer look at the other card I made. I know I could’ve used just one sweater for each card, but I thought these sweaters were too cute, so I decided to use all of them! I’m thinking one of my sons would probably wear a sweater like one of these and the other would think it’s ridiculous! LOL Regardless, at least they each know that they are loved by me!

I also had these fun TE Snarky Valentine Insiders panels that I gold foiled. I have to share some snark with those I love too! LOL (Click on the photos above to enlarge them if you’re on my website.)

I thought I’d share another card I had made for someone I love that was given to my husband for Valentine’s Day yesterday. (Sometimes, I have to wait until he gets it before I share!):

This pup and his boing heart hat cracks me up! Look at that face! I actually made this last month during a Craft Roulette challenge. I decided that I liked it so much that I put a Valentine greeting on it for my husband to give him on Valentine’s Day.

I used the Taylored Expressions Puppy Love (retired) stamp set and colored in this cute pup with Copic markers and die cut him out. I stamped the TE Gingham Check BG Stamp in black ink over red cardstock. I splattered some white Copic Opaque over top.

For the lace, I white heat embossed the border stamp from the TE Flip the Lace stamp/die (retired) over the Toffee cardstock and placed beneath the check background piece. I added a black strip between the two and then popped the dog on it. I stamped the “Seriously” from the pup stamp set and the Valentine greeting from the lace stamp set together and fussy cut them out to pop up with foam tape on the card. I added a few white hearts around the pup. The entire card is a mini slim from a pre-cut and scored Toffee card base.

Art Journal Inspiration-For Those About to Rock

Hello friends! I hope you’re having a great start to your week! We’re supposed to be getting some snow coming in tomorrow, but this will be the first heavy snowfall that we’ve had all winter! I can’t complain too much and I enjoy looking at the snowfall. (from my window that is! LOL)

When I’m playing in my craft room, I enjoy listening to music. I enjoy all sorts of genres and will listen to pretty much anything, as for me, it’s another form of art to appreciate. Speaking of genres, I have more inspiration to share for the “MUSIC” prompt I’m hosting this month at Art Journal Journey:

My husband and I both like the “classic rock” and there are several bands that we grew up listening to over the years. So if you know rock, then you know the lyrics on the guitar pick comes from an AC/DC song!

For the background: I started with a 8.5″x5.5″ canvas paper 140# (using the backside without the canvas texture) and attached some printed paper of several music bands I found online. I ripped some sections and then covered it with white gesso to lighten it up…I wanted it faintly in the background. I took a vortex circle stencil and sprayed it with oxide sprays in Fired Brick and Salvaged Patina. I then splattered some white and black paint over it and also added some splattering with silver watercolor. I sponged some grey ink around the edges and then used a black distress crayon to go along the edges to darken it more.

I stamped the guitar, colored it and positioned it in the center of the circle and then stamped a few music notes around it in the background.

I used my Cricut machine to create the layers of flames at the bottom. The guitar pick was found online, printed and cut out. I went around the edges of that with a black distress crayon as well. I placed a black sparkle strip at the bottom and cut some stars with silver foil cardstock. I black heat embossed the hand and punched it out with a circle punch to pop up on the largest silver star.

Lastly, I’ve used some rub-ons for the stitching details and then went around each star with a black pen.

A few years ago, we went to the Rock & Roll museum in Cleveland, OH during a road trip the following year after COVID. It was a fun museum!

We were standing in front of the museum and we were trying to get the entire sign in view of the photo… it was cool and rainy that day.

I took a photo of the AC/DC display with some clothing, guitars and even some song lyrics they had wrote down. It was pretty cool as most of the items were donated to the museum from the artists themselves. Some of it was really weird and random, but very interesting!

“V” is for Vintage

Hello friends and happy Friday! Are you looking forward to a nice weekend? I have some crafty time in store for me, but honestly, I need to be cleaning my craft room!

Today starts a new challenge over at the Alphabet Challenge blog! Please be sure to check out the challenge blog to see how to play as we go through the alphabet letters every-other week (fortnight) for each new challenge.

For this challenge, we are at the letter “V” for Vintage and here’s what I’ve come up with:

I love the look of vintage style cards, but I don’t make them very often, so this was a great challenge to get me motivated in making one!

I fell in love with the Simon Hurley “In the Garden” stamp set (discontinued) last year , but never got a chance to play with it until now. I thought the images were perfect for a “vintage vibe”. I got that along with these gorgeous papers from Scrapbook.com called “Vintage“, of course! The imagery went well with the stamps in the set.

I started with cutting all of the different patterns from the paper pad into a card design. I sponged around the edges with Hickory Smoke oxide ink. I die cut the “graph paper” panel with Taylored Expressions A2 Postage Stamp Stacklets die. On that panel, I stamped the wording from the SH stamp set with Hickory Smoke oxide as well as a few hearts in Tattered Rose oxide ink. I also took a music score rub-on that I got from Scrapbook.com to add in the corner and then sponged around the edges with Hickory Smoke oxide. I layered this panel onto a piece of grey cardstock. The second layer was also layered onto another piece of grey cardstock and then layered over another piece of the Vintage pattern paper over an A2 top folding white card base.

For the stamped images, I stamped them in black pigment ink and then clear heat embossed them. I used Shabby Shutters, Tattered Rose and Victorian Velvet oxide inks to watercolor by smooshing the ink pads onto a surface and using a water brush for coloring. I fussy cut out the images and popped them up over the panel with foam tape.

Before attaching this panel onto the next panel, I added some grey seam binding ribbon tied in a bow on the side and then popped it up with foam tape. I also die cut the lettering from the Tim Holtz Script Words set in black and attached onto the graph panel.

Art Journal Inspiration-Sing From Your Heart

Hello friends! When it’s winter time, something I miss hearing are those birds happily chirping throughout the day. We get the occasional bird chirp, but nothing like it is when the weather is warm.

So in honor of those singing birds, I have more inspiration to share for the “MUSIC” prompt I’m hosting this month at Art Journal Journey:

I had fun putting this one together with a quirky bird who’s singing with all his heart!

For the background: I started with a 5.5″x8.5″ Bristol Smooth cardstock piece so that I could do some ink blending. With a stencil, I inked over it with Salt Water Taffy oxide and then painted over it with a layer of white gesso. (I was trying to keep the colors soft and light.) I then took a different stencil and sprayed over it with Speckled Egg Oxide Spray and then used the left over from that in other places. I then took Shabby Shutters, Mowed Lawn and Salvaged Patina oxide inks to go over the rest of the stenciled layers until I got the look I wanted. I used a water spray over top and then splattered white paint over the page for more texture.

For the bird: I cut out the body, wing and beak shape in different pattern papers, used a distress crayon rubbed along the edges and pieced it together with the wing being popped up with foam tape. I used a pen to doodle around the bird and create the legs. The eye and heart on the bird were punched out pieces. (the heart paper is from a music sheet scrap)

The words were printed on my computer over some pattern paper. While the ink was still wet from the printer, I clear heat embossed over it. I cut out each word and attached over page. I took a pen to doodle around each section. I also doodled around the edges of the entire page with the same pen.

Lastly, I took some white paint and brushed a “heart bubble” coming from the bird’s beak. I stamped a few music notes inside the bubble with brown ink. I also stamped a few solid hearts around the words in pink ink to finish it off.

Art Journal Journey Host for February-MUSIC

Hello friends and welcome to February! Hoping that wherever you are that this is a great month for you! This month I’m excited to be the host over at Art Journal Journey for my second year! So be on the look-out for several art journal pages from me this month!

For my prompt, I was feeling a musical theme🎵 would be a broad area to cover for art journaling. You could pull out some old sheet music, use music notes and/or instruments, song titles and/or lyrics, musical quotes, etc. I look forward to seeing all of the musical inspiration in the gallery, so I hope you can join too! Here’s my first sample page to get started:

I had made a card a few years back that I made my own piano, but in a smaller scale size and I thought it would be fun to try and incorporate that idea onto a page.

For the background: I started with my usual size 5.5″ x 8.5″ cold press 140# watercolor paper and used a ruler to line ” white keys” for the piano at the bottom with a black marker. I cut strips of black glossy cardstock for “black keys” and attached them over top. BEFORE attaching the sheet music in the center, I attached some baby wipes to a ruler with rubber bands and dropped watercolor in rainbow on it. I then dragged the ruler down several times to achieve the rainbow pattern at the top. (I made a video a few years back if you want to see how it’s done on a card HERE.)

I die cut a scallop curved border on the sheet music and added some black ink around the edges before attaching in the center of the page so that the piano keys and rainbow pattern shows. I then took some gold watercolor and splattered over the page but covering the piano keys to prevent them from getting splatter.

Once the background and piano was done, I die cut the “music” lettering from more of the glossy black cardstock and added a musical note brad next to it. I took a white gel pen and wrote the quote in the center and then lined that black strip and the keyboard area with strips of gold metallic paper.
