Mix It Up With Veggie Stamping!

Hello friends!  Happy July!  I can’t believe that June is gone and the 4th of July Holiday is gearing up now!  I’m looking forward to some happy times ahead through the Summer and I hope you are too!

Today begins a new challenge over at the Mix It Up Challenge Blog and it’s always “Anything Goes with an optional theme“.  For the optional theme this time, we’d like to see some “Veggie Stamping“! (In other words:  use vegetables as your source for stamping with!)  I’ve never done it before, but I gave it a try!  Here’s what I came up with:

Now I’ve heard of people carving food as art, but I don’t think I’ve ever really seen anybody actually use vegetables/food as a stamp!  Have you ever tried this?  I encourage you to give it a try and join in the challenge with it because it was so much fun to play!

For my vegetable stamping, I didn’t want to use ink pads in fear of contaminating/ruining it, so I decided to use some acrylic paints instead.  I grabbed some veggies from the fridge along with a plate to hold the paints and cut the veggies to dip into the paint piles.  My husband decided to come around and snap a photo of what I was doing, so I thought I’d share my mess:

I was actually in the process of cutting out the “veggie flowers” when he took the photo, but I started with some acrylic paper because I was using paints and cut the paper large so I had plenty of room to play around.  It was a bit of trial to figure out how each veggie would look.  I thought it worked best to dry out the veggies as much as possible on a paper towel.  The coral large flower came from the red pepper.  I found that using a paint brush to apply it to the veggie was a better look.  Then I dipped the celery end to make the purple flowers.  The shallot was used to create the teal flower (the shallot was applied the same as the pepper) and I used the end of the carrot for the center of the flowers with yellow paint and then I used a broccoli to dab on the center of the flowers as well with some dark grey paint.

I then tried to arrange the flower bouquet how I wanted on my card base after cutting out the flowers.  I took a paint brush with (no kidding) celery green colored paint and painted the stems coming from each flower.  For the “leaves”, I used the same paint and dabbed the celery end around the stems.

I finished out my card by stenciling the brick background before attaching the cut out flowers.  I popped some of the flowers up with foam tape and then I white heat embossed a sentiment over dark grey cardstock and popped that up over the bottom of the bouquet.  This was attached to another panel of grey cardstock that I attached to a top folding white A2 card base.  I topped it off with a few gems.

  • So what do you think?  First time trying it out and just playing around having fun is all!  A little abstract for sure, but hopefully they do look like flowers on here🏵️!  I’m really looking forward to seeing what everyone does with this!  Hope you can play along too! (Remember you have 6 weeks to enter!  So plenty of time to play!)

THANKS SO MUCH FOR POPPING BY TODAY!  HAVE A GOOD ONE & I’LL SEE  YOU SOON!

June Art Journal Page-Finding Happiness

Hello friends!  Happy weekend!  I hope you’re enjoying yourself with whatever you have going on.  It’s hard to believe that it’s almost time for us to celebrate the 4th of July holiday!

We’ve been having higher than normal temperatures this time of year and you never really know if that humidity is going to circle back up in the air to create a thunderstorm.  Nature can be a wonderful thing though, and this is what the focus is for my page.

  • It’s time for the monthly Art Journal Page collaboration with my crafty friend, Carol (from Crafty-Stamper)! We get creative trying to use up our never-ending stash piles along with a prompt for each month.  I know she always has great inspiration to share, so please check out her blog too! Here’s my AJ page with the “SMASH OUR STASH” June prompt of “DISTRESS”-(rough up/sand/rip, etc):

So taking this approach with the prompt of “distress”, I thought it called for green colors and lots of nature collage type elements from my stash!  I have tons of those Tim Holtz ephemera packages, so I pulled those out along with distress oxide sprays.  I haven’t used those in quite a while.

For the background:  I started with a 5.5″ x 8.5″ (pre-punched holes with the Bind-It-All machine) very heavy weight canvas paper.  I started with a couple of pieces of ripped printed papers and distressed/inked the edges of it with Vintage Photo Distress Oxide ink.  I then took a Tim Holtz stencil and randomly applied paste over it.   After the paste dried, I placed the panel into a box and sprayed it with variations of water and distress oxide sprays in Peeled Paint, Rustic Wilderness, Fossilized Amber and Vintage Photo.  I added water and dried with my heat tool after each color until it was blended as I liked.  I took off the Vintage Photo cap and splattered a few drop with it.

Before applying the ephemera pieces, I had a solid fern stamp that I randomly stamped with Rustic Wilderness Distress Oxide ink.  I also stamped a few of those “rain drop” images randomly in the center of the page with black waterproof ink.  I removed the background color out of the images with a watercolor brush and then added back in a touch of blue color from an ink pad lid.  I used a white gel pen to add a highlight and covered the drops with a glitter brush pen.

Finishing the page, I’ve stamped the bug and magnifying glass, colored them in and added some acetate behind the magnifying glass, I ripped, sanded and distressed the edges of the page, the card behind the bird and randomly over the background.  Before attaching the pieces, I took some white pearl wax and rubbed over the stenciled paste areas.   I also sanded around the edges of the black sentiment strips.  I attached all of the ephemera pieces and popped the card and butterfly pieces with foam tape.  I added a safety pin to the card and glitter to the tops of the flowers in the corner.  (hard to see in photo)

  • The sentiment at the top reads:  if you want to find happiness, find gratitude.

Another prompt I worked on with this is the challenge over at Art Journal Journey which was “What Makes You Happy“.  So although nature helps with happiness for me, I find that happiness is multi-faceted with the purpose being exactly what the sentiment says.   I thought it went perfectly with this page.

Since my husband is retired and we now have time to take little road trips here and there and sometimes stop along the way to find an interesting trail or nature walk or park to explore.  We’ve had some great times doing this and I love being out in nature especially among the trees after a gentle rain.  The smell and coolness in Autumn are fabulous for this!

This was quite a wordy post, but I hope you’ve enjoyed my inspiration today and how it was inspired.  Thanks so much for joining me today and please check out Carol’s blog too!

Masculine Makes

Hello friends!  I hope you had a great weekend!  It’s been record heat and continuing to be all this week over my way and it’s way too hot to be outdoors for any length of time!  So I thought it would be nice to bring the outdoors to my craft room instead.

I wanted to share the card I made for my husband for Father’s Day:

My husband is an outdoor type and where he prefers to be most of the time.  We really have fun going hiking and visiting parks whenever we can and this seemed like a great start for making a card for him.

I’ve used several Taylored Expressions items for this card including:  Great Outdoors Layering Stencil & Clear Combo, Through the Woods, Wood Slice Background Stamp, and Hello Lovely sentiment set to make this card along with an entire set pictured below.

For the background:  I stamped the Wood Slice stamp over kraft cardstock (along with the envelopes to match) and then I splattered some black and cream color paints over them.  I took the panel cut the Ridged Circle Stacklets into the background.  I wrapped some twine around it and attached them to an A2 side folding black card base.

The stencil creates four different scenes all at once by layering the stencils with colors you choose and then you cut each one out.  I layered mine over black cardstock and attached to the kraft card front panels.  I stamped the trees and sentiments and also added those to each card with some of them being popped up with foam tape.

Here’s what the rest of the cards look like using the same products.  I changed up the scenes for each one but using the same colors for each stencil layer.  I changed the sentiment so that I have a masculine card for several different occasions too.  There are lots of males in my family to send cards to and I always seem to run out of them.

Thanks so much for stopping in today!  I appreciate your kind words and taking the time out of your day!  See you soon!

Clean & Simple at Sparkles Monthly

Hello friends!  I hope you’re having a wonderful week so far!  We’ve been getting some rain, which is great for the freshly planted flowers.  I enjoy being able to sit on my covered porch and listen to it rain as long as it doesn’t get too stormy!

Today starts a new challenge theme over at the Sparkles Monthly Challenge!  For this month, we’d like to see your CAS (clean & simple) creations!  I look forward to seeing the inspiration in the gallery, so I hope you can join!  Here’s what I’ve made for this challenge:

Sometimes I can really struggle with a clean and simple design because I always feel like I need to add something more.  The end result is in the minimal embellishments and design.  This one got stuck in my head and came together rather quickly and I like how it turned out.

Most everything used on my card came from My Favorite Things.  I started with watercolor (Bristol Smooth) paper and the Watercolor Wash stencil and blended a rainbow of colors over it.  While the stencil was still in place, I took a water bottle to spritz water droplets over it and removed the stencil.  I let it dry and then clear heat embossed the sentiment that was stamped in a black pigment ink.  (The key to this is to make sure the watercolor area is completely dry before you heat emboss anything over it.)

I cut out the panel with a wonky stitched rectangle die.  I’ve attached it to an A2 side folding black card base.  I was pulled to splatter over this, but thought I needed to keep it simple, so I took some drip drops in “cosmic” color and added them randomly to the design.

  • So, what do you think?  Simple enough you can do it too and enter it in the challenge, right?  If you need more inspiration, check out the challenge blog to see what the other design team members came up with for CAS.

Thanks so much for stopping in today!  I hope you have an amazing week!

Art Journal Journey Inspiration-Letting Go…

Hello friends!  Hope that your week has been off to a good start.  We are closing up February, but there are still a couple of days left if you’d like to enter the Art Journal Journey Challenge that I’m hosting this month with the theme of “LIGHT“.  It has certainly been a journey as I’ve never created that many pages within a month’s time!  I did have fun on this journey as it also helped to push me to try a few different things that I can take me with as I continue to art journal.  Thank you to everyone over there for having me as host for this month and to those that have played along, as I have really enjoyed all of the fabulous inspiration!

For my last page, I challenged myself to try something I don’t feel comfortable with:

Sometimes as hard as it can be, you just have to let it go.   I let go the fear of hand lettering and drawing for this page.

For the Background:  I’ve got a piece of canvas paper 5.5″x8.5″ that was pre-punched on the right side with my Zutter machine.  (I like this canvas paper because it takes paint really well and the texture does not interfere with making the writing wonky.)  I took my favorite colors turquoise and lavender paints that were extremely watered down to cover the page with.  I was going for very light colors with a flow that blended together.  Once dried, I took some light blue ink and stenciled in certain places.

For that cute little girl that I found on my computer from Tiddlywinks, I printed her out rather large to fit on my page and colored her with Copic markers.  I printed an additional image over a piece of vellum and cut out the dandelion seeds and hearts and attached that portion to the girl image I colored.  I did this so that you could still see the background.  Once I’ve attached her to the page, I cut a piece of cotton ball and glued it to the dandelion weed and the one in her hair.  (Cotton is pretty light!)

Lastly, I took a deep breath and used a pen to write the title above her head as well as all of the dandelion seeds floating around with the words.  I used a white paint pen to make an underline around the words as if they’re flying through the air.  I filled in the lettering with a blue gel pen.

  • I hope you’ve enjoyed my page today and found some inspiration with it.  I also hope you’ve enjoyed my journey this month with art journaling too!  Thanks for stopping in!

November AJ Page-Winter Wonderland

Hello friends!  Hope everyone has had a wonderful Thanksgiving for those that celebrate.  And with that, there is also the Black Friday deals, and today is “small business Saturday”.  So have you’ve gotten some really good deals or do you shop during this time?  I don’t really shop too much during this time, but I enjoy hearing about the great deals everyone has gotten!

The last Saturday of the month also brings us to the monthly Art Journal Page collaboration with my crafty friend, Carol (from Crafty-Stamper)! We get creative trying to use up our never-ending stash piles along with a prompt for each month.  I know she always has great inspiration to share, so please check out her blog too! Here’s my AJ page with the “SMASH OUR STASH” November prompt of “STENCILS” (can also make your own):

I do love stencils, don’t you?!  I have lots of them in my stash and I don’t always use them as much as I’d like to, so how fun to pull out several of them for this month’s prompt!  All of the ones I’ve used on my page are from Tim Holtz.  The entire page is stencil expect for the deer, sentiment and bottom snow!  (I would’ve used the deer for a stencil too, but I don’t have one.)

For the background:  Started with my usual 6″x9″ 140# watercolor pre-punched holes on the side.  I took the large star looking stencil and sponged some VersaMark ink over it towards the top of the page and heat embossed it with clear EP.  (This made a “resist” for the ink I layered on top.)  I took a long strip of masking paper and ripped it to create some hills for the bottom.  I needed to mask so the colors didn’t go over it.   I took several different colors of Distress Oxide sprays along with spritzing with water to help the colors move around and made a few layers with this.  Once dry, I went over the background with the dotted stencil and sponged ink over it with a blue color.

For the tree stencil, I needed to be sure that it would cover the background I created, so I used some green paint to sponge over the stencil, but because the background is blue, it’s sort of harder to see the green.  This stencil also had a second part where you can cover each tree with another layer for either another green or snow.  So I used some Hero Arts white paste to cover it with.  I also used the same paste to add another layer of stencil to the sky for snowfall.

The silhouette deer is a stamp that I stamped with black pigment ink and then I heat embossed it with clear EP.  My final touch to the page was to take the Hero Arts white paste and cover the hills at the bottom using my spatula.  Really love the dried look of the paste as it has a wonderful shine to it which works great for snow!  It didn’t take as long as I thought it would to dry. (About 2 hours it was hardened.)

I found a couple of the Tim Holtz sticker quotes to go with my theme, added to black cardstock and went around the edges with a silver paint pen.  I cut them out with scissors and glued to the page.  I took some silver wax and went around the edge of the page with my finger and lastly added some glitter drops to a couple of the centers of the “stars” in the sky.

Hope you’ve enjoyed my art journal page today or have been inspired!  I appreciate you taking the time to stop in!

Winter Animals for Sparkles Monthly Challenge

Hello friends!  I hope you’ve had a great start to your November so far!  It’s been a few minutes since I’ve posted, but I have to say that I’ve been pretty busy in the background!  Hoping to share what I’ve been up to soon!

Today begins a new challenge over at the Sparkles Monthly Challenge!  This month, we’re looking to see some WINTER ANIMALS!  I hope you can join in the fun with us!  A reminder that this will be the final challenge for the year as we’ll be on Holiday break until January.  Here’s my take on the theme:

My first thought of a winter animal is a penguin of course!  I’m a huge fan of them and have so many in my collection…including other than stamp related!  These guys are really enjoying winter on this scene!  I’m using the My Favorite Things Playful Penguins stamp set and I started with a stencil from MFT that has “pond” shapes and lightly stenciled the soft blue for a place for my “ice platform” to be.

After creating the “ice pond”, I used some tape to mask off the bottom portion so that I could ink blend a sky at the top.  I used some White Opaque Copic and splattered it over the sky area.  I then used another MFT stencil to create some snow drifts in the background.

The two penguins, igloo, ice pad and sign were stamped, colored with Copic markers and die cut out to be placed over the scene.  I added the flattened penguin to the ice pad and then had the igloo in the background while the sign and penguin are waiting at the side of the pond.  I used a pen and wrote “FREE RIDES” on the sign.

I finished it off with a glitter pen over the “ice pad” and igloo and then used some Stardust Stickles over the snow on the sign.  I thought it needed some more snow falling down, so I took some sequins and added it to the scene.

If I were on that scene, I would probably be more like the flattened penguin on the “ice pad”!😆  How about you?  Do you like the snow?

Thanks so much for joining me here!  I hope you like my penguin card and will sharing your favorite winter animal in the challenge too!  Have a great day!

Occasional Blooms

Hello friends!  I hope that you’re having a wonderful week!  I’m excited about the changes I’m seeing outside with the weather!  Looking forward to that cooler temperature and pretty colors!

  • I wanted to do a bit of “house keeping” regarding my blog.  I apologize if you’re having problems trying to leave a comment.  I’ve had a few people contact me about this and I noticed that when I cleared the “cookies/cache” from my end…it somehow changed the appearance of my blog comment area…I don’t know why!?  I did find out that if you start typing in the comment box, buttons above the box will appear in which you can choose how to login.  I suggest that if you don’t have a WordPress/Gravatar account, to choose the envelope button to leave your name and e-mail address that way. (The Facebook login does not work.)  Then you can hit the reply button below the box to publish it.  I tried letting the commenter leave an anonymous reply (without having to type in name and e-mail), but then I’ll have NO idea who it is unless a name is given within the comment, so I had to re-engage that again.  I have also contacted a support person to help me navigate what’s going on and maybe I can get it back the way it was before.  I do apologize if it’s giving you a problem.  You can also go to gravatar.com to create an account which will work with ANY WordPress platform blog….but you don’t have to unless you want to do that!  You should still be able to leave a comment regardless.  Thank you for taking the time to care enough to share your support with me…I deeply appreciate it!

So now to get on with some crafting projects!  I’ve had to change gears on the seasonal makes and create some cards that I needed to send out to some people and they all happen to be in blooms:

First up is a “thinking of you” card creating for a friend using several Lisa Horton products.  These particular LH products all came from Inky Stamper.

I started with the craft background and embossed it with the LH Variegated Leaf 3D embossing folder and went over the texture with white ink.  I then used the LH Hydrangea Stencil/Die/Embossing Folder to create the blooms…love how it turned out!  I took some gold ink on the last layer of the stencil to go over the centers of the flowers.  I popped the bloom up over the embossed craft background and white heat embossed the sentiment from the IS Pig Cause stamp set and cut it out in a banner to place over the blooms.  I finished it with some gold gems.

My next card is a sympathy card needed for a craft friend who lost a loved one.  This person likes to cross-stitch and quilt, so I thought this MFT stitched quilt die (this one retired) would be fun to do over some pretty floral papers.  I had to die cut several white frames with it and lay the centers of the paper cut pieces on the first frame and then I layered two more of the white frames over top with the last pattern paper over that to give it that 3D look.  (Not sure where the paper came from other my stash!)

I cut the sentiment from the Whimsy Stamps Sympathy/Heartfelt/Condolences die set and layered it in the same way I did the quilt frame die.  I also white heat embossed the sentiment from the WS Deepest Sympathy stamp set and cut it out from a banner to attach right underneath the “p” in the die cut word.  I finished this one off with some clear gems.

And on a happier note, I’ve made another bloom card to wish someone turning 75 years young a happy birthday!  This is the first chance I’ve had to use this fun die set from Taylored Expressions!  The bottom container came from the TE Antique Pails die set.   I stamped the TE Burlap Background over it with the same color ink as the cardstock as well as Butter Cream ink to give it some texture.  The flower arrangement was cut out from the TE Garden Variety die set in various colors.  I also brushed some of the same colors in the centers of the flowers.  The centers of the flowers have a silver metallic enamel dot.

For the frame, I’ve used the TE Diagonal Stitch Rectangle die that only leaves the marks but doesn’t cut anything out.  The sentiment was stamped and cut out with the TE All Together-Occasions 2 set/die and popped up with foam squares over the panel.

I think the most fun was arranging the flowers in the container!

I hope you’ve enjoyed my cards today and you’ve been inspired!  Thank you so much for stopping by!  I appreciate you!  Have a wonderful weekend!

Alice in Wonderland for Sparkles Monthly

Hello friends!  Hope you’re doing well and have had a great start to September!  It’s hard to believe we’re almost into Autumn already!  I’ve been enjoying the outdoors for as long as I can and Autumn around my area is so pretty, so I need to go out in it!  Crafting will be waiting for me soon!

Today starts a new challenge for Sparkles Monthly with the theme of: Alice in Wonderland!  So I hope that you will stop by the blog to check out the inspiration and join us this month!  Here’s what I’ve come up with:

This was really fun to put together!  I have always loved the Alice in Wonderland stuff and I actually have quite a bit of it for crafting, but this stamp set by Visible Image was new to me and something that I had gotten from a win for a challenge I entered a few months back.  I also used the Supernova Stencil for the background from the same company.

For the background:  I ink blended several colored and then spritzed with water for the watermark effect.  I went over it with the stencil in a darker blue ink and spritzed it again.  I then added some gold and white ink splatters over top for more texture.  It was cut out with the wonky stitch rectangle die and layered over mirror gold cardstock.

I had some Alice in Wonderland papers and used s strip of the blue checks to cut out a wavy border and attached it to the bottom of the stenciled panel.  I added these layers to an A2 top folding blue card base.  I had some old-fashioned looking stamps which I had for years and stamped a few on the background in blue ink.

I colored “Alice” with Copic markers along with the piece of cake and key and then used the coordinating die to cut them out and attach to the card front.  I added some pink glitter to Alice’s drink in her hand and the filling in the cake.  I also added some gold sequins over the card.  The sentiment was cut out with a banner die which I thought would make for a fun birthday card.

Thanks for stopping by to check out my card and I hope you’ve got some inspiration with it!  (I’m a bit behind with so many things, so I will be checking out to see what you’re up to!)

August AJ Page-A is for Adventure

Hello friends!  Wishing you a happy weekend!  We’ve had a heat advisory in our area all week, so I’ve been staying indoors organizing, cleaning and crafting!  Hope that you’re taking some time to enjoy your weekend even if it’s just for a moment of time.

I can’t believe we’re at the last weekend of August, because it’s time for the monthly Art Journal Page collaboration with my crafty friend, Carol (from Crafty-Stamper)! We get creative trying to use up our never-ending stash piles along with a prompt for each month.  I know she always has great inspiration to share, so please check out her blog too! Here’s my AJ page with the “SMASH OUR STASH” August prompt of “LETTERS”:

Thinking of YOUR stash, what do you come up with from the prompt?  I think as crafters, we probably all have some type of lettering in our stash!  I have stamps, stickers, chipboard, wood, stencils, ephemera, etc so I knew this would be a good opportunity to pull out something.  And if that doesn’t work for you, I suppose you could take the prompt literally, and attach an actual written letter or make one up yourself to add to your AJ page.  Lots of ways to interpret a prompt which makes it easy to come up with a plan to inspire you.  So this is what I came up with.

For the background:  I started with a 6″ x 9″ Strathmore Acrylic paper with pre-punched holes at the top and stenciled some crackle paste over my Tim Holtz alpha stencil and let dry.  I then took some Distress Oxide sprays in the colors kitsch flamingo, salvaged patina and speckled egg and mixed with sprayed water to let the the colors run over the stenciled areas.  After it dried, I used the Tim Holtz Grunged stamp set and stamped more letters over the background with black archival ink.  The edges were blended with dark gray ink and then I splattered the page with gold and white paints with a fan brush.  Lastly, I took some white gold metallic wax and went over the stenciled letters.

The film strip came from the Whimsy Stamps Slmiline Film Strip die cut out from black cardstock. For the three image sections, I found some packaging with maps images on them and cut it out with the same die.  Since the packaging had a slick surface, I painted it with clear gesso so I could stamp over it.  After it dried, I stamped the three panels with the TH Grunged stamp set in the same colors of Oxide inks as the background and then stamped the travel images with black archival ink from an old Stampin’ Up! set called “Traveler”.  To finish is off, I used an old chip board letter “A” from my stash, painted it black and added some more of that white gold wax along the edges, found a TH “small talk” sticker to go over it and then I drew some lines around it and sponged it to make it look grungy.  I finished it with more ephemera I found in my stash from Tim Holtz and Stamperia… and decided to call it done.

  • Thanks so much for stopping by today!  I hope you’ve found some inspiration with my project!  Enjoy your day!
